Junghee Kallander, M.A., Ph.D.
Certified Classical Pilates Instructor
Junghee was certified in 1999 by Romana Kryzanowska of The Pilates
Studio and was a Teacher Trainer for Power Pilates from 2003-2010.
Originally a professional dancer from Seoul, Junghee came to the
United States in 1992 to attend New York University. While receiving
her degree she studied many courses about movement and alignment,
like Labanotation, and learned about the Pilates method. However,
it wasn't until going to Drago's Gymnasium that she became inspired.
Junghee was immediately fascinated by the 70-year old clientèle
that moved like gymnasts and circus acrobats.
Working alongside Romana, the Pilates "elder" and protégé
of the late Joseph Pilates, was a priceless learning experience.
Not only was Junghee able to witness Romana's technique and infallible
knowledge, but Junghee took a weekly, private lesson with Romana
for 4-years.
In 2001, Junghee was asked to model for Dr. Peter Fiasca's “Classical
Pilates Technique” DVD series. She worked alongside Peter,
Bob Liekens, and Alycea Ungaro. The DVDs were a huge success and
are still used as a reference for instructors today. In 2003, Junghee
joined Power Pilates as a Teacher Trainer and co-founded and directed
the first Pilates studios in Korea - Pilates Korea and Classic Pilates.
These two studios were among the first international Affiliate Teacher
Training Centers for Power Pilates where she certified 17 instructors
over 2-years.
Junghee has an M.A. in Dance Education from New York University
and a Ph.D. in Performing Arts from Kyung-Hee University. Her published
research papers include “The Effect of The Pilates Method
on Dancers’ Cognitive Style and Body Awareness”, “A
Qualitative Approach to the Effects of Pilates Exercise”,
and “An Inquiry of Philosophy and Principles of The Pilates
Method”.
